a story for your thursday.

Embarrassingly enough, that would be my desk at School. UEA weekend couldn't have come at a better time, right? I'm super behind with grading planning organizing cleaning laundry dishes general life, and I woke up with a bit of a cold today (sad face). Take this story that Daniel told me yesterday as further evidence that I seriously needed a break from school:

The other night, I went to bed a little before Daniel did. These days I tend to fall fast asleep as soon as my head hits the pillow, so I was already fast asleep by the time Daniel came in to get ready for bed. I remember none of this, but according to him, I said his name a few times so he came over to the bed. Then I launched into a mini-monologue about how I had explained a story problem to him, and he just needed to do it. I had already told him how, so why hadn't he done it yet? Daniel was trying really hard not to laugh at me, but apparently I was talking with my hands and basically giving him a lecture as if he were one of my students. Finally, he gave up trying to reason with me and told me that I was still sleeping. I guess I was in a compliant mood, because I simply sighed and said "Okay," rolled over, and fell asleep again.

We both got a pretty good laugh out of it, especially because talking in my sleep isn't one of my normal characteristics. Conclusion? We think teaching school is slowly making me crazy. Either way, I'm planning on relaxing this weekend. I see a lot of movies on the couch with blankets and  hot apple cider, long walks outside, and a possible trip to the pumpkin patch.

Happy weekend!

Summer Happenings.

Want to know my top three reasons for becoming a teacher?

June, July, and August.

Haha! Don't worry, I'm just kidding. But we have had a pretty fun and relaxing summer so far. Here are a few snapshots of what we've been up to. This summer, I have...

Spent hours and hours setting up my classroom and getting organized for the school year.

Gone on a handful of fun adventures, including getting glitter strands with Lizzie, a hike to donut falls, and swimming/volleyball at Grandma & Grandpa's pool.

Discovered a new hobby: gardening and keeping houseplants! My very first tomato plant was a success.

Gone on several dates with my handsome husband. Going anywhere with D is my favorite; whether it's to the movies, the cabin, or getting shakes at Iceberg.

Said goodbye to my little brother, and it was not fun! In case you're wondering, he's doing exceptionally well in the MTC and has picked up Spanish quickly. We're all so very proud of him!

Eaten a lot of way too much good food. The Sweet Tooth Fairy is too good to pass up, peach shakes are my favorite summer treat, and I make a pretty tasty loaf of banana bread if I do say so myself.

Gone to three beautiful weddings with great friends. Congratulations Allison, Marianne, and Maria!

A bull in a china shop.

Sometimes Daniel is like a bull in a china shop. Have you ever heard that saying? It means means you often drop or break things, or move roughly in small areas. Today, as we were on the floor duct taping the broken rung of Daniel's dining room chair, we came up with a comprehensive list of everything Daniel has broken in our apartment since we moved in:

1. Dropped a pocket knife that cut through our bed sheet and the mattress pad underneath.
2. Slipped in the shower and cracked the wall when he crashed into it.
3. Slipped in the shower again and pulled down the shower curtain rod.
4. Dented the ceiling moving a grandfather clock into the apartment.
5. Chipped the white finish on the stove dropping a bowl.
6. Cracked the light fixture in the kitchen. (In all fairness, it was me who asked him to screw it in tighter).
7. Broke the bottom rung of his dining room chair, as stated above.
8. Squeezed the pink printer ink too hard, and made a lovely design on the carpet. (Bonus: his hand was dyed pink for two days).
9. Shattered a glass cup on the kitchen floor.
10. Dented the IKEA dresser with a belt buckle.

As we were making the list, we discovered that I'm not innocent either. So here's my list of broken things:

1. Spilled an entire melted lilac candle on the bedroom carpet.
2. Dropped a bowl and dented the microwave (the first week we had it).
3. Fed a spoon to the garbage disposal.
4. Ruined a white dress shirt with eye-makeup.

So there you have it. I've said it once, and I'll say it again. It's a really good thing our apartment manager doesn't read my blog.

Dear D,

You deserve an award for being such an awesome husband. Just thought you should know. But since I don't know of any husband contests going on around these parts, I decided to write you a thank you note instead:

Thank you for being so thoughtful. You remembered the time we were at the store and I saw that beautiful Kate Spade bag on a great sale. I never told you how much I wanted it, but somehow you knew. After a long day of interviews, field trips, and teacher panels, I couldn't believe my eyes when I got home to find it sitting on the table with the sweetest note. I love my new bag, but I love you even more. Also, I'm sorry that I cried.

Thank you for laughing with me all the time. You have such a wonderful sense of humor. I love that it still feels like a sleepover, even after more than a year and a half, when we get to go to sleep together every night. I also love that we can start an epic game of truth or dare while the dinner is taking an extra long time to cook. It makes those little moments so much more fun!

Thank you for never getting frustrated about the constant piles of papers and notebooks that are all over the apartment. Teaching comes with more papers than I could have ever imagined, and I'm so grateful that you are understanding.

Thank you for volunteering to do the dishes, even when it's not your turn. You know how much I hate to do them, so even when it's me that let them pile up, you do it without being asked.

Thank you for always being supportive. You encourage me to do whatever makes me happy and remind me to take time for myself when I need it.

Thank you for going on adventures with me, like picking up random ingredients at the store because I want to try a recipe I saw on Pinterest. Or going on a walk with me in the pouring rain when you've already showered for the day. Or going to the D.I. to find a costume for a party. I appreciate it more than you know.

Thank you for always telling me that I'm beautiful. I notice how often you say it. Some days, I really need to hear it.

Daniel, you are the most wonderful husband and you are perfect for me. Lately, I have been feeling extra grateful to have you in my life. Every single day, I thank my Heavenly Father for sending such a wonderful person to be my companion for eternity. Thanks for being my partner in everything.

Love always,

M

Happy Birthday to D!

February 5, 2012

Dear Daniel,

Happy 25th birthday, sweetheart! Can you believe you're already 25? This age is a milestone for a few reasons: 1. You can now officially rent a car (without all those crazy fees), 2. Your car insurance rates go down (yay!), and 3. You're a quarter of a century old! Yipes. I've had a great time celebrating your special day with you all weekend. Being with you makes me happier than anything else. Thanks for all the little things you do that make me smile every day. Thank you for making me laugh, for working so hard, and for helping me to be a better person. You've always been my better half. Happy birthday Daniel! I love you so much. I'm so very glad you were born :)

Love always,

Mandy

really loving my husband today.

Today, I'm feeling extra grateful for D and what a wonderful husband he is.
I had a pretty rough day yesterday, but he knew how to make it all better.
I'm so glad I married someone that I could stay up all night talking to and laughing with.
Thanks for being the greatest husband, D! I love being your wife.

P.S. I read the most inspiring blog post today about not placing blame in your marriage. It was a great reminder to me to only do things that will bring peace into our home. If you're married (and even if you're not) I think it's a great read!

Weekend Updates.

This weekend...
D and I had great success on our little Saturday shopping escapade. We found the COOLEST hats at World Market that we just couldn't pass up. (p.s....I love that the trees behind us make it look like we're in the forest!)

M's raccoon hat.

D's owl hat.

We also found a place in SLC that sells Milka bars! D was so excited. Milka bars are the most popular chocolate bars in Europe, and they are made in Germany where D served his mission. It was some of the best chocolate I've ever had. We'll have to go back for more!

We also went to Red Robin with D's family on Saturday night. I think I ate half an onion ring tower by myself, and it was wonderful. I wish I had gotten a picture of my nephew Jace flashing the U of U sign to the table of girls next to us. You can see a picture of him here. (He's the one with the mohawk, of course!)

To get into the Halloween spirit, D and I also cuddled up and watched Shutter Island this weekend. D isn't much for scary movies, but he indulged me on this one. It turned out to be a really great movie! We both recommend it.

Last weekend...
We headed up to D's cabin last weekend to watch conference and see the gorgeous fall leaves. It was absolutely perfect up there! It felt like we really got away from the world, and we were able to really focus on the messages from our leaders.

and a few weekends before...
D decided to be a super awesome and thoughtful husband, and placed a little blue box on my lap for no reason at all! He's the sweetest ever.
The card read:

What better color to find your keys with?

Love,
D

I opened the box to find the most adorable key chain ever from T & Co. He said he noticed the key chain I had was getting pretty worn out so he decided to buy me a new one. [Insert mushy ooohs and awwws here]. He sure knows how to pick 'em! Thanks, D!

Hope you all had a wonderful weekend!
And if you're a U of U student, enjoy your Fall Break!

One Year.

August 16, 2011

Dear Daniel,

I can hardly believe this day is here! Happy anniversary sweetheart!! It's crazy to think that an entire year has passed since our perfect wedding day last August. We've been married for a year! When we first got married, I always thought that a year would be such a huge milestone, and it definitely is. We've experienced so much together already, and I wouldn't change a thing. Being sealed to you has been the greatest blessing. You make me want to be a better person every day. You are always so supportive of me and my endeavors, and I'm so grateful for that. Thank you for being so patient, loving, and kind. Thank you for being worthy to take me to the temple, for honoring your priesthood, and for helping us put the gospel first in our lives. Thank you for the wise, calming spirit you bring into our marriage. Thank you for being so honest and hardworking. Thank you for your sense of humor and for laughing with me all the time. Most of all, thank you for loving me every single day and for making me so, so happy. There is no one I'd rather go through life with than you. Happy one year anniversary, Daniel! I love you so much. I can't wait to see what the next years have in store for us!

Love always and forever,

Mandy

p.s. Coincidence that the wedding album we ordered four months ago just happened to arrive on this very day? I think not ;)

Some recent (very funny) conversations.

I've participated in some quite hilarious conversations lately. A few are most definitely worth sharing, so here you go:

Daniel and I, while making dinner.
Me: I was making the bed today, and I noticed that there's a rip in the fitted sheet. Have you noticed that?
Daniel: Yeah, I saw that.
Me: It's way weird! And it's on your side, too. Any idea how that happened?
Daniel: Uh...nope.
Me: Huh. It's funny, because when I looked at it closely, it looks more like a cut than a rip. And the mattress pad is cut, too.
Daniel: Oh really? That's odd.
Me: Yeah.
Daniel: ...I dropped my knife, okay?
Me: What?
Daniel: I was opening my knife, and I dropped it.
Me: O...kay....
Daniel: I know how it happened. I dropped my knife and it cut the sheet. And the mattress pad. And then I just lied. Sorry.

(I couldn't help but laugh! The best part? I totally didn't suspect him of anything! Haha!)

This one takes some set-up. My mom and my brother Steven (Ryan Gosling look-alike) came over to drop off some cookies and a gift card to Cabela's for D's half-birthday (yes, the Jacobsens totally celebrate half birthdays). Steven had just gotten his wisdom teeth out that day, so why he was out and about is beyond me. Anyway, this is how it went down:
Mom: Daniel, I hope you can find something great at Cabela's for your hunting trip!
Daniel: Definitely, thank you!
Steven: Um, Yeah. Um...find a good.....no, I forgot what I was going to say. No, wait. Have... have a good hunting trip.
Daniel: Uh, thanks...Steven...
Me/Mom: BAHAHahaHAhahah!
Steven: I think it's time to go home now.

Daniel and I, walking around the Gateway.
Daniel: Feet are so weird.
Me: What?
Daniel: They're so weird! Think about it. We wear flip flops and show our feet off, but they're very...intimate.
Me: That's gross.
Daniel: No! Not like that. Intimate was the wrong word. But they're personal. If someone came up to you and touched your arm, that wouldn't be weird. But if they came up to you and touched your feet?
Me: Yeah...that would be weird.
Daniel: I know! Feet are so weird.
Me: .....

This weekend, we escaped to the cabin.

D and I spent this weekend up at the cabin for a much needed getaway. The scenery was beautiful, the stars were bright, and the mountain air was fresh and relaxing. And I swear D's blood pressure drops about 10 points as soon as we get up there.

Some of our favorite cabin activities included:

taking the ranger for a spin
feeding the horses
watching movies
taking naps
cuddling
eating snacks
taking pictures
playing scrabble
and...
fishing.

That's right! D took me on my second fishing trip to Smith & Morehouse this weekend. Unfortunately, it wasn't nearly as eventful as our last fishing trip. But the weather was gorgeous, and I got to wear my yellow rain boots! We got up extra early and the light on the lake was so beautiful. It was totally worth the trip, even though our fishing stats weren't so great...

Stats from our fishing trip

Number of times the line broke: 2
Number of casting bubbles lost: 2
Number of flies lost: 4
Number of line tangles: 2
Number of spiders in the camera bag: 1
Number of bugs in the car: 5
Number of times M went into a sketchy bathroom: 1
Number of location changes: 2
Number of rocks caught: 1
Number of bushes caught: 3
Number of fish caught: 0

That's right, folks. All that, and not a single fish to show for it. (D would like to add "Number of expletives said internally: 943"). But in all seriousness, we still had so much fun. We decided at the end of the trip that all we needed was each other to make the trip a success. But if you're in the mood for a little more excitement, you should definitely go read about our last fishing trip.

We also had a lot of fun playing with the horses up at the cabin. They're not our horses, but we still thought they could use a snack.

And that's the story of our wonderful weekend getaway to the cabin.

p.s. Doesn't D look super sexy in those aviators? I sure loved seeing that all weekend ;)

Today, I thought I'd share our love story.

This is the story of how Mandy and Daniel became M and D.

Did you know that D and I went to the same high school? Don’t worry, neither did we! Even though we shared more than a handful of mutual friends, our paths never crossed until one fateful night in July of 2008, after we had both graduated. It was a warm summer evening and I was out with my best girlfriends looking for something fun to do. We ended up at our friend Adam’s house to watch him film a funny video for his fraternity. I remember a tall, dark, and handsome guy walking in with his friends shortly after we got there. He was kind of shy, but I could tell by his infectious sense of humor that he was someone I wanted to get to know. He introduced himself as Daniel.

It’s funny how you remember little details from important events in your life. D still remembers that I was wearing short denim shorts and a yellow tank top. I remember what he was wearing, too. Except that’s probably because he was wearing a gorilla suit for the video they were filming. After the video was done, I remember we went to get frozen yogurt at Spoon Me. When it was time to go home, I was hoping that we’d get to hang out with those guys again soon.

I definitely got my wish. Our little group of friends got closer and closer as the summer went on. It definitely helped that D was couch-ridden for a week after he had surgery on his ankle. We brought him his favorite Butterfinger shakes and watched the Olympics 24/7. When D got his cast on, his mom told me that he requested a specific spot to be saved for me to sign it.

Toward the end of the summer, I went on a vacation to California with my family. D and I exchanged about a million text messages while I was gone. I was beginning to think that I might actually have a crush on this Daniel boy.

As things went on, I was beginning to get the hint that D just might like me back. I had really wanted to go to the Secondhand Serenade concert, but I had no one to go with. All it took was a mention of the concert to D, and we were driving all over the city together trying to find tickets. We turned up empty, but that didn’t matter to us. Our first adventure together was a total blast. We even discovered that we shared a mutual love for Jimmy Eat World – our favorite band to this day.

When school started, D and I signed up for an Institute class together – just the two of us. Even though he didn’t have any other classes that day, D still walked me all the way to my next class every day after Institute.  Then one day, he finally asked me on our first official date.

Our first date was classic. D had called my friends to see what I liked, and he everything planned out. He was so excited to take me to Color Me Mine to paint our own pots, but when we got there, it was closed. I think it’s hilarious, but D still hates talking about it. I’ll have you know that the rest of the evening went perfectly. We had dinner at Friday’s, and then we went back to his house to watch a movie.

Our first kiss was also classic. D was just a little nervous about it, so we had about ten of those awkward hugs where you both know you want to kiss, but you’re both too scared to make the first move. Then, one beautiful August evening, D finally kissed me for the first time. It was on my front porch after one of our dates, and it was perfect. I was so happy.

I could just end our story here and say “it was all downhill from there…” But that actually isn’t true, and it wouldn’t be honest. So I’ll tell you what really happened.

The kisses and dates became more frequent. But the more I started to like D, the more I afraid I felt. I couldn’t explain the feeling back then, but eventually I sorted it out. I realized that I was falling for Daniel. I’d fallen for people before, but nothing had felt like this. I wasn’t in high school anymore. I was in college. These were the “big leagues.” You date people in college to get married. Married? And he was a returned missionary. He was intelligent, mature, driven, kind, and perfect. And I was terrified.

I was terrified because I could see a future with Daniel. I knew that if I kept dating him, I’d fall in love and want to get married. But I wasn’t ready to get married. I felt young. I felt inexperienced. I needed time. I didn’t know how to explain this to D, so I told him that I thought we needed to date other people. I tried to keep my distance and when that didn’t work, I told him I wasn’t interested. I don’t know if D saw though it or if he was just crazy, but throughout all of that, he never gave up on me.

I remember one conversation that we had one evening. I fed D my classic line that I wasn’t ready for a relationship. I will never forget what he said to me that night. It may seem like an odd response, but it was exactly what I needed to hear. He said: “Mandy, if we were ever together, I can promise you that I would never, ever hurt you.” And I knew he was telling the truth.

Things cooled off for several weeks after that, and I was beginning to think that D had finally given up on me. But then, out of the blue, I got a phone call one evening as I was driving home from work. It was Daniel. He said something like “I know we said we’d date other people and all that, but there’s this date night on Saturday, and there’s honestly nobody I want to go with. I want to take you. It’s probably a slim chance, but would you like to go with me?”

I surprised myself when I said yes. I surprised myself even more when I realized how excited I was to go with him. I had missed going on dates with D. All at once, everything I liked about him came flooding back to me and I absolutely couldn’t wait for our date. We had so much fun together. After that night, I threw caution to the wind. I shrugged my shoulders and decided to go with it. So what if I fell in love with him? I didn’t want to miss my chance with a fantastic guy because I was too afraid to give it a chance. So I took a leap of faith.

And it was was, hands down, the best leap I’ve ever taken.

We said "I love you" in November, and started talking marriage early the next year. Even though we both knew we wanted to tie the knot, we didn't see any harm in spending another year dating each other. I never regretted it because we learned a lot about each other over that year. D got down on one knee and asked me to marry him on March 31st, 2010 on the same very same doorstep that we had our first kiss. We were married for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake Temple on August 16th, 2010. But as, you know, that was only the beginning.

i love it when...

i love it when i get to wear my yellow rain boots three days in a row...
...even if it means that it has been pouring rain.

i love it when i only have two classes at school...
...even if it means i am going to school in the summer.

i love watching netflix all the time with D...
...even if it means we don't have cable.

i love it when my mom brings us costa vida...
...even if i don't get to eat it until 8:30 at night.

i love it when D's siblings are in town...
...even if they are going back to washington soon.

and my personal favorite...

i love it when D is romantic...
...even when he burns my candles that were exclusively meant for decoration.

cabin continued

We had so much fun at Daniel's cabin this past weekend. We went up there on Friday and Saturday to celebrate mine and Emma's birthdays! That reminds me - I think I forgot to mention that I turned 21 on October 27th! Wahoo!

Anyway. The cabin is up on Pine Mountain, which is just past Oakley. Pine mountain has this darling "community" of cabins. I loved looking at all the different shapes and sizes. My family has never had a cabin, so it's always a novelty for me to go up there.

We did the classic cabin stuff. There was a lot of snacking, chatting, movie-watching, sleeping, and guitar playing. I always forget how good John and Daniel are at playing the guitar.

Oh, and we also cooked!! We made spaghetti, chicken, peas, and rolls for dinner, and breakfast the next morning was bacon, eggs, oatmeal, and toast. Yum yum!

This trip to the cabin also marked my very first four-wheeling adventure! It was so much fun!!

We drove on the trails winding around the cabins until we'd pretty much gone around them all. We ran into a really steep trail that led up to a ridge above all of the cabins, and of course Daniel and John had to drive up it. I was pretty sure that the ATVs were going to tip over backward, but I think I was just being paranoid. But I did have a reason to fret when we ran into the pine tree that had fallen right across our trail.

Let me set this up for you. So the trail was pretty narrow - wide enough for one ATV but not two. This made it so we couldn't turn around at all. On the left was pretty much a mountain, and on the right was one of those terrifying death-drops that you see in the movies. (Okay, maybe not that bad, but it was definitely something I didn't want to fall off of). When we first saw the tree, my fabulous husband decided he was going to drive OVER it. Not his best thought, and I'm sure I told him so. Next, John and Daniel decided they were going to pick the tree up and move it. This did not actually go so well. The final plan was to pull off the branches on the skinniest part of the tree (the top) and pile snow over it so we could drive across. Emma and I were not so convinced that this was a good idea. Why, you ask? Well, because the skinny part of the tree happened to be perilously close to the movie-style death drop!!

dun dun dun...

We love our husbands to death, but Emma and I were not about to be on the ATVs when the guys drove over the tree, so we walked across first. Watching the ATVs tip as the wheels went over the trunk was about all I could take. I thought for sure one of them was going to roll down the mountain. Luckily, we were all just fine. That is, until we ran into ANOTHER fallen pine tree not 30 feet down the same trail.

*sigh*

After we got over the second hurdle, there wasn't much more excitement except for Emma losing her glasses in a giant mud puddle. The ride was really relaxing. I couldn't believe how beautiful the mountains were. We saw some gorgeous views, but we all agreed that pictures just couldn't do it justice.
