Elementary School Memories

As many of you know, I am getting my degree in Elementary Education. In just a few short weeks, I will start one of the biggest adventures of my life - student teaching. When I get into the classroom, I want to be a really, really good teacher. But in order to do that, I'm going to need a little bit of help. This is where you come in.

I was wondering if you'd take a minute to tell me some of your favorite things about elementary school, or school in general.
(Pretty, pretty please with sugar on top?)

In case you need a few ideas, you could tell me:

  • Who was your favorite teacher, and why?
  • What were some of the most fun assignments, activities, and projects that you did?
  • Did you go on any awesome field trips?
  • What things about elementary school were the most memorable?
  • What systems did your teachers use to manage classroom behavior? Did they work?
  • Were there any things about school or your teachers that you didn't like?
  • If you have kids in school, what do you think makes a good teacher for your kids?
  • Any other advice? I'd love to hear it :) See if your spouse, friends, or kids have any ideas, too!

I'd love it if you could write down some of your thoughts and send them my way. You can e-mail me at mandyj17@gmail.com, or just leave a comment below. I'm so excited to hear your thoughts! Thank you so much for your help.

Much love,

M

  3. @ Joan - Thanks! I'm so excited!

@ Tori - That is so wonderful! Don't you just love it? It's the best major. We should definitely swap ideas! I'm student teaching in 6th grade, so the upper grades are my favorite. What about you?

  4. I'll be in the 8th grade and I actually hope I can teach 8th grade history, or Georgia Studies... considering where I am from. haha. My two concentrations are in Social Studies and Science though.

  5. I started out at Elementary Ed, but I called up to my university about a week ago and made the switch to Middle Grade, but my mother was a 1st grade teacher for 20 years and is now a principle!

  6. Alright, here's one of my memories just for you: It was the end of my 6th grade year and my elementary career was coming to an end. I remember that we had to take some sort of placement test for the bigger (and scarier) grades ahead. I had scored particularly high in the math section, and my teacher took me aside during recess to tell me that I had the option of taking a class that would put me a bit ahead. I guess I looked terrified at the thought of being "different" because Mr. Robinson quickly explained that it was actually pretty cool to go on, and that I would still have friends. I don't know what it was about that, and I honestly can't remember exactly what was said, but the really cool thing about it was, I didn't want to be different, but I had a teacher that took the time to tell me that different was okay. Mandy, Shmandel, Dear Crazy Loon, I know you are going to be the absolute best teacher ever and kids are going to remember you for the rest of their lives :)
